Grumman F9F-5 Panther

Grumman Aircraft designed it's first jet, the F9F in 1947, and it went into production in 1949.

Originally, the Panther was powered by a Rolls-Royce Nene turbojet built under license by Pratt & Whitney as the J42, but during development the engine was changed to the RR Tay-based J48-P-2. The -5 variant shown here was uprated to the P&W J48-P6-A producing 6250 lb of thrust.

During the design, it was found the thin wings could not store enough fuel to meet range requirements, so permanent fuel pods were mounted on the wingtips. This, incidentally, improved the aircraft's roll rate.
